Pet Underwater Treadmill and Rehab in Pensacola at Davis Animal Hospital
Evaluation
At Davis Animal Hospital, the initial rehabilitation evaluation is a 60-minute appointment with Dr. Kelsey Erdos, a certified canine rehabilitation therapist and veterinary acupuncturist. This appointment consists of an orthopedic, neurologic, and *myofascial exam. We look at your whole pet, not just the primary concern. Often when you have an injury your body compensates in other ways and may cause muscle or joint pain that’s not as obvious to your regular veterinarian. When developing a plan, we look at the whole picture. The plan will include in-clinic recommendations and home exercises. Depending on your pet's condition, they may also receive the first treatment during this evaluation.
*Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain disorder. In this condition, pressure on sensitive points in your muscles (trigger points) causes pain in the muscle and sometimes in seemingly unrelated parts of your body
Services
Underwater Treadmill
This therapy can be very beneficial to many different patients such as pets who are reluctant to bear weight whether it is due to orthopedic injuries, arthritis, or neurological conditions. The buoyancy of the water helps to take the stress off of their joints and allows them to use their legs more easily.
Pets who need to lose weight can also benefit from using the underwater treadmill as it allows them to exercise without having to support their weight on their limbs.
Athletic patients can also benefit from its use. Dogs used in hunting, field trials, agility, and other sporting events can use the underwater treadmill to help increase strength, endurance, and overall fitness level.
Rehabilitation/Gym Sessions
Rehabilitation is the use of therapeutic exercises combined with additional modalities such as hydrotherapy, therapeutic laser, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, therapeutic massage, and acupuncture to improve the recovery of patients with both acute and chronic conditions.
Rehabilitation can restore, maintain and promote optimal function and mobility; enhance recovery postoperatively; alleviate pain; improve circulation, coordination and range of motion; provide confidence and comfort in geriatric patients.Pets of all ages, sizes and breeds can benefit from our gym session. Any animal suffering from chronic pain, arthritis, obesity or muscle weakness can experience an enhanced quality of life as a result of rehabilitation. Healthy, athletic animals and working dogs can also benefit from our conditioning program.
Our main objectives in physical rehabilitation are to restore function, improve performance, accelerate healing and decrease pain. We also aim to prevent orthopedic and soft-tissue injuries by helping pets gain and maintain fitness.
Acupuncture
Davis Animal Hospital provides veterinary acupuncture treatments for dogs and cats in Pensacola, FL. Pet acupuncture produces a healing response by targeting specific points on your pet’s body. Your pet’s acupuncture treatment is performed in a calm and relaxed atmosphere at our animal hospital. This treatment is not painful to your dog or cat and is performed without general anesthesia.
Veterinary acupuncture treatment can be used as an alternative to medications or as part of a multi-modal approach to help your pet achieve the desired therapeutic benefits. Our veterinary acupuncturist will customize a treatment program for your pet, which may involve multiple treatment sessions.
Laser THERAPY
We are proud to offer laser therapy for pets. Laser therapy is a non-invasive, pain-free, and drug-free treatment that is beneficial for animals experiencing pain and discomfort. At Davis Animal Hospital, our team uses therapeutic laser to treat a variety of acute and chronic medical conditions.
The therapy is done with a small hand held device that the veterinarian or technician holds over the area to be treated. What your pet will feel is a soothing warmth and almost immediate pain relief. Any anxiety your pet may experience will quickly disappear once the therapy starts. Some dogs have been known to become so relaxed that they go to sleep. The process requires no special pre-therapy preparation. Likewise, there are no restrictions required when you take your pet home after therapy.
The pet laser is a great breakthrough in treating pet pain and we are delighted to now offer the therapy as one of our pet health services. If your four legged pal is hurting, give us a call and arrange an appointment for pet laser therapy evaluation!
Laser Therapy is also a great option for cats!
Cats are very sensitive to medication and do not have the same options as dogs when it comes to pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications. Cats that have a joint injury or arthritic pain in their backs can be successfully treated with Laser Therapy.
NMES (nEUROMUSCULAR ELECTRICAL STIMULATION)
NMES uses a device that sends electrical impulses to nerves. This input causes muscles to contract. The electrical stimulation can increase strength and range of motion, and offset the effects of disuse. It is often used to “re-train” or “re-educate” a muscle to function and to build strength after a surgery or period of disuse.
NMES helps to stimulate muscle contraction and helps to decrease swelling. It is helpful for preventing or treating muscle wasting due to disuse in neurological and orthopedic patients. NMES also aids in controlling muscle spasms and reducing pain.
PEMF (PULSED ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS)
PEMF, is a revolutionary wellness modality that utilizes soothing Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields to stimulate and exercise the body’s cells. The earth emits a pulsing electromagnetic field at 7.8 hertz. This natural energy field, combined with around 8 million global lightning strikes per day, allows our planet to sustain life. Much like the earth, our bodies are electromagnetic; our brains use electromagnetic signals to communicate with every bodily system. Science has proven that if our cells have enough electrical charge, the body will heal itself!
PEMF is a holistic supplement that infuses the body with natural energy at the cellular level.
