Our Services

preventative health care
Annual examinations are the best way to determine a patient's overall health and help detect problems before severe illness or complications occur. Early detection and preventive medicine save lives and can save owners the expense of dealing with issues that have been allowed to progress into more complicated stages. Our caring veterinarians are here for you.
The veterinarian will review vaccination status, diet, and parasite control during an annual exam. A thorough physical exam will follow, looking at dental health, eyes, ears, coat, skin, and body condition. The heart and lungs are auscultated for abnormalities such as heart murmurs, arrhythmias, atypical breath sounds, or other issues. The veterinarian will palpate the abdomen, feeling for any changes in abdominal organs, such as kidneys, liver, bladder, spleen, intestinal tract, or other abnormal findings, such as free fluid or masses. The veterinarian will also evaluate the urogenital tract and lymph nodes and look for any changes in the musculoskeletal or nervous systems. Specific bloodwork and other diagnostic tests are done based on the animal's age and health condition.

Surgery
Our veterinarians provide a wide range of surgical services, from routine spay and neuter procedures to more complex surgeries involving the stomach, intestinal tract, and urinary bladder. They continually review the most up-to-date surgical practices and attend continuing education programs to ensure we employ the most current surgical protocols and safety measures. A staff member monitors your pet’s heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiration, and anesthesia levels during surgery. We ensure that your pet is kept at a comfortable temperature with heat support as needed throughout surgery and recovery.
During your check-in, we will schedule a discharge time for you. At that time, we will discuss medications and at-home care instructions. We will answer any questions about postoperative pain management and will be available throughout the recovery.
We know that animal surgery can sometimes cause stress and worry. You may have questions about the safety of anesthesia or worry about how your pet will be cared for. Let us address your questions and concerns and put your mind at ease.

Dentistry
Normal pet mouths have white teeth that are clean and attached to the gums smoothly. The number one sign of dental disease in a pet is halitosis, also known as bad breath!
In healthy pets’ mouths, there is usually minimal to no odor, no gum irritation, no bleeding, or visible tartar. Unfortunately, plaque (the building block of tartar) is an invisible slime layer of bacteria on the teeth, which causes inflammation of the gums and destroys the surrounding bony attachments of the teeth. It isn’t the thick visible tartar or calculus that is the problem; it is the invisible plaque! This is periodontal disease.
Bacteria from the mouth can also travel to vital organs, such as the kidneys, liver, and heart, and cause permanent damage. Without regular care, your pet’s lifespan can be shortened dramatically. Fortunately, we can help reverse some of the issues related to periodontal disease. However, it is not reversible once bone loss starts, so early intervention is critical.
Offering complete dental exams, comprehensive dental cleanings, assessments, dental radiography, nonsurgical and surgical extractions, oral neoplasia evaluation +\- removal, chemotherapy as dictated, jaw fracture evaluation +\- surgical or nonsurgical repair, surgical repair of most lip, facial, gingival, palatable and dental defects.
We currently do not offer orthodontics or root canal surgery at this time. -
Rehabilitation
At Davis Animal Hospital, the initial rehabilitation evaluation is a 60-minute appointment with Dr. Kelsey Erdos, a certified canine rehabilitation therapist and veterinary acupuncturist. This appointment consists of an orthopedic, neurologic, and *myofascial exam. We look at your whole pet, not just the primary concern. When you have an injury, your body compensates in other ways and may cause muscle or joint pain that's not as obvious to your regular veterinarian. When developing a plan, we look at the whole picture. The plan will include in-clinic recommendations and home exercises. Depending on your pet's condition, they may receive the first treatment during this evaluation.
*Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain disorder. In this condition, pressure on sensitive points in your muscles (trigger points) causes pain in the muscle and sometimes in seemingly unrelated parts of your body
Rehabilitation involves using therapeutic exercises combined with additional modalities such as hydrotherapy, laser, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, therapeutic massage, and acupuncture to improve patients' recovery from acute and chronic conditions. Other services include the underwater treadmill, acupuncture, and laser therapy (available for our cat patients).

Radiology and Ultrasound
Davis Animal Hospital has an advanced digital radiograph system. This machine allows us to quickly take a radiograph of your pet and view the image in only a few seconds. This is better for your pet because radiographs can be taken promptly without waiting for the film to develop. The radiographic image itself may be enhanced and manipulated on the screen, allowing the veterinarian to detect things that may not have been evident in a traditional film. The ability to store all of our radiographs on a digital storage system allows us to view the images in multiple locations throughout the hospital or e-mail the photos to other veterinarians or specialists if needed.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of the body's organs. It can help diagnose causes of pain, infection, masses, cardiac problems, and more. It can help guide a veterinarian in collecting biopsy and urine samples. An ultrasound is a safe procedure that requires little to no preparation and is safer than an X-ray. We usually ask that you drop your pet off with us for a few hours without breakfast in case sedation is needed.

Diagnostics
Animal wellness testing allows us to discover any possible health issues. Even if your cat or dog appears physically healthy, our wellness testing can alert us to any underlying health concerns. While we hope we never find anything on the reports, finding possible issues early is essential. The earlier we see and address potential problems, the better we can address them. Early intervention means that your pet can live a longer and healthier life with early interventions.
The integrated in-house lab diagnostics system combines results from the separate in-house lab machines into a single report. This vet lab station also shows your pet's results from that day and previous testing we have done on your pet. This allows us to compare results and watch for trends that may be occurring (for example – a kidney value slowly increasing over the years may alert us to early renal disease). This vet lab machine imports patient info from our practice management software to help ensure accuracy and exports results to aid in accurate record keeping. The IDEXX vet lab station also has another great feature: it can connect to our reference lab (the blood we send out of the hospital), correlate in-house, and send out data in an easy-to-read timeline. This allows us to safely store a lifetime of your pet's bloodwork for easy viewing and keeps all of their information together should we need to consult with a specialist at the IDEXX reference laboratory. -

PRP and Stem Cell Therapy
For decades, researchers believed that stem cells have the potential to treat a variety of diseases. Doctors use stem cells for treating lymphoma, leukemia, many blood disorder diseases, and solid cancer tumors in people. The result? A resounding success in most cases.
In addition to pet stem cell therapy, platelet-rich plasma is another effective treatment for osteoarthritis, ligament, or tendon injury. This natural cell therapy relieves joint pain and promotes quick healing. In this treatment, the doctor takes a plasma- and platelet-rich concentrated blood sample to heal and regenerate the affected tissues.
